PETALING JAYA: Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar was officially appointed as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during the 118th Session in Turin, Italy, yesterday.

The 58-year-old Tunku Imran is the second Malaysian after Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah to have been appointed to the position.

Hamzah, who retired in December 2004 at the age of 80, is now an IOC honorary member.

Tunku Imran’s appointment is for an eight-year term.

Four others were also selected as the new IOC members. They were Beatrice Allen (Gambia), Nicole Hoevertsz (Aruba), Francesco Ricco Bitti (Italy) and Hein Verbruggen (Holland).
